A password-protected directory or area is a folder which can be accessed when a username and a password are typed in, so no unauthorized people may view its content. This feature may be used for the primary folder of a particular site or just for a certain subfolder based on the needs you have. As an example, if you are building a new website and you don't want people to see it before it is 100% ready, you might want to prohibit the access to it entirely, whereas if you want only some individuals to be able to access particular files, you can password-protect only a specific folder, while the remainder of the Internet site could be seen by anyone. In either case, a “403 Forbidden” error page will appear when the login details the visitor types in are not correct. Even a direct link to a file shall not work provided any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Cloud Website Hosting

If you use any of our cloud website hosting plans, you will be able to make password-protected areas without difficulty even if you don't have any experience with such matters. We've integrated an extremely easy-to-use point-and-click tool in the Hepsia Control Panel, offered with all accounts, so you shall be able to protect any folder within a matter of seconds. You will only have to choose a domain or a subdomain and the exact folder that should be secured (the primary one or a subfolder), and then to type in the preferred username and password which will be used to access the folder in question when you need it. Each secured folder shall have padlock icon inside the File Manager section, so you'll be able to see instantly what content is secured and what is not. If required, you can create a number of different sets of login details for the exact same folder.

Password Protected Directories in Semi-dedicated Servers

When you have a semi-dedicated server account with us, you'll be able to secure any content you have uploaded using our protection tool. Its interface is as simple and intuitive as that of the Hepsia Control Panel it's part of, so you'll not have to enter any code at any time. You will only need to select one of the domains/subdomains that you have in the hosting account and to choose which folder needs to be password-protected - the website’s root folder or some folder below it. Then you can type the username and the password, that'll be stored in encrypted form in our system, and you'll be good to go. The protection shall be switched on at once, so anybody who tries to access the newly protected folder shall have to input the right login details. In cases where several people must be able to access the same content, you could make a separate username for each one.
